MITCHELL SHIELD REPORT 2009
Rd 1 v Southern Dist & Churches Cricket League
After winning the toss and batting, CMCA started with a brisk
opening stand of 27 before losing our first wicket. Max Murray (16) fell LBW
at 40, and but the mainstay of the innings was Will Pucovski (41 retired)
who batted us into a strong position at 5/121 when he retired at the 32nd
over. He received valuable help from Johnathon Aikins (18) but we then suffered
a collapse, losing 3/4 and being in a bit of a predicament until Darcy Kennelly
(12) and Jack Vorbach (13 no) steadied the ship with some sensible batting,
adding 26 for the 9th wicket to reach 9/153 after our 40 overs.
SDCCL started off brightly, looking a real chance at 1/43 in the 15th over,
but a great diving gully catch by Jack Vorbach off the bowling of Pat Burnell
(1/10) removed danger batsman Krelle, and thereafter a steady trickle of wickets
saw SDCCL drop behind the run rate and be bowled out for 98 in the 38th over.
Oliver Milner (2/7) returned the best figures but all 9 bowlers used were
steady.
Rd 2 v Federal District Cricket Association
We had no hesitation in batting after calling correctly, and
Austin Heldt (22 retired) and Max Murray (40 retired) got us off to a solid
start, reaching 1/96 at the half-way mark. Oliver Milner (40 retired) and
Tom Lamb (40 retired) blasted a string of boundaries as CMCA piled on the
runs, with Will Pucovski (27 no) and Jack Vorbach (10) icing the cake to help
post 4/218.
Speedsters Jack Vorbach (2/12) and Luther Lyon (1/5) did some damage with
the new ball, as did leggie Darcy Kennelly (1/7), and after 15 overs Federal
were 5/28 and sinking fast. Their lower order showed suicidal lack of restraint
against the spinners, with Johnathon Aikins (2/11) and Hugh Hamilton (4/1)
destroying the tail to put Federal away for 41 after 20 overs. Keeper Will
Pucovski had a field-day behind the stumps with 4 stumpings and a catch standing
up. This big win proved a significant percentage-booster in our quest for
a top-two spot on the ladder.
Rd 3 v Dandenong & District Cricket Association
We were delighted to be sent in, and despite an unfortunate
runout in the second over, never looked back. After seeing off a good burst
from the DDCA opening bowlers, normal service was resumed as Max Murray (40
retired) and Will Pucovski (40 retired) saw CMCA gallop to 1/84 at the halfway
mark. Darcy Kennelly (40 retired) rode his luck and played a dashing innings,
and with useful contributions from Wes Agar (13 no) and Oliver Milner (11
no), CMCA accumulated 5/196 after 40 overs.
DDCA showed absolutely no interest in chasing the runs and plodded along to
4/121 after their 40 overs. Bowling into a howling gale proved the main obstacle,
but our spinners toiled away manfully while the quicks Luther Lyon (1/20),
Jack Vorbach (1/11) and Oliver Milner (1/14) picked up the wickets. Deep Das
Gupta was excellent in the field with a catch and a runout.
Rd 4 v Ferntree Gully & District Cricket Association
CMCA were sent in again, and initially the decision looked vindicated
as FTG’s left-arm opening bowler grabbed 3 quick wickets to see CMCA
reeling at 3/17 after 7 overs, with 3 in-form batsmen back in the shed. Fortunately
Tom Wilson (26) and Johnathon Aikins (40 retired) weathered the storm, putting
on a superb 81 run partnership before Tom was narrowly runout. Two highlights
from Johno were a pull-shot for 6 and a magnificent lofted straight-drive
for 4. Tom Lamb (29), Wes Agar (23) and Darcy Kennelly (14 no, including one
huge 6) helped us post an impressive 7/175, a great fight-back after a rocky
start.
Opening with spin paid immediate dividends when leggie Darcy Kennelly (1/6)
struck in his first over, thanks to a fine catch at short cover by Luther
Lyon. Bowling was steady and fielding tight, and FTG soon fell well behind
the run rate. Tom Lamb (2/1 off 4 overs) hurled down some real thunderbolts,
shattering the stumps twice to see FTG 3/57 after 20 overs. At this stage
FTG put up the shutters to defend percentage, and dawdled to 6/89 at the close.
Jack Vorbach (1/9) continued his fine form with the ball.
Rd 5 v Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association
MPCA called correctly and elected to bat in light drizzle
on a big slow ground at Peninsula School. The coin toss was about
the only thing that did work for them, as Luther Lyon (2/6) was on song early
and ripped through the top order. The fall of two wickets in the 20th over
saw MPCA’s batting looking distinctly sick at 5/39. The prognosis was
altered to terminal when Austin Heldt (3/3), Tom Wilson (1/6) and Wes Agar
(2/11) mopped up the remainder to dismiss MPCA for 65 in the 35th over.
To their credit MPCA tried hard, having CMCA 3/19 after 10 overs but thereafter
Luther Lyon (33 no) and Wes Agar (11 no) calmly picked off a few loose deliveries
to see us home to 4/68 after 37 overs.
Quarter-Final v Southern Dist & Churches Cricket League
A forecast maximum of 39 caused the game to be shortened to
30 overs per side, but typically contrary Melbourne weather saw a cool change
come through early and most of the match was played in mild conditions. SDCCL
won the toss and elected to bat, getting off to a respectable start at 1/27
after 9 overs, the first wicket falling after a bad mix up resulted in a run-out.
The next 12 overs were catastrophic for SDCCL, crashing to 8/59 and virtually
out of the contest. Spinners Hugh Hamilton (2/5) and Max Murray (2/2) created
havoc, with keeper Will Pucovski assisting the spinners by stumping all 4
of their victims. Jack Vorbach (2/4) bowled the last 2 batters to wrap up
SDCCL for a paltry 75 in 26 overs.
Opening batsmen Oliver Milner (27 ret) and Max Murray (9 ret) were untroubled
to put on 46 in 10 overs, at which point they were retired. Tom Wilson (7
no) and Tom Lamb (26 no) knocked off the remaining runs needed, and after
18 overs the match was finished.
Semi-Final v Mornington Peninsula CA
Our opponents were 8th-placed Mornington Peninsula, who had
caused the greatest upset in Mitchell Shield history when they defeated top
side North West in a tense quarter-final. CMCA won the toss and batted, with
Oliver Milner (15) and Max Murray (11) taking us to 33 before both were out
in the 12th over. Batting maestro Will Pucovski (40 retired) combined with
Tom Lamb (25) to get CMCA back on track (79 off 23 overs) before Lamb was
dismissed going for the big hit. Pucovski and Tom Wilson took it to 3/115
in the 30th over, at which point Pucovski retired. Three wickets fell in quick
succession before Wilson and Johnathon Aikins (12) added 23 for the 7th wicket
until Wilson was runout for a fine 39. 50 runs came off the last 6 overs to
allow CMCA to post a healthy 8/176.
Darcy Kennelly (1/16) struck in his first over, but MPCA got off to a fair
start at 1/31 after 9 overs. Hugh Hamilton struck twice in his first over,
and a further stumping in his next over saw MPCA slump to 4/35. However stout
resistance added 54 for the 5th wicket, keeping MPCA in the hunt. This dangerous
stand was broken by Max Murray (3/7), who proceeded to decimate the MPCA middle
order. Wes Agar (1/4) rattled the stumps in his first over, and Hugh Hamilton
returned to mop up the last 2 wickets to return the remarkable figures of
5/15. MPCA lost their last 6 wickets for 17 runs to be all out 106. Tomb Lamb,
Darcy Kennelly and Jack Vorbach all took 2 catches, and Will Pucovski effected
2 stumpings to take his haul to 11 stumpings in 7 games.
Grand-Final v Eastern Peninsula CA
The match was played at scenic Chelsworth Park, and our opponents were 5th placed Eastern CA. ECA won the toss and batted first, as they had done in every match in the tournament. Experienced campaigners Luther Lyon (1/2) and Darcy Kennelly (1/7) bowled superbly to remove both openers, with ECA struggling at 2/9 after 7 overs. Their innings was reduced to a shambles when they lost 4/8 between overs 13 and 17, with Hugh Hamilton (2/8), Jack Vorbach (1/4) and Pat Burnell (1/9) inflicting mortal blows. The last chance of a competitive score was snuffed out when Darcy Kennelly brilliantly ran out their main run scorer Blair-Holt in the 23rd over, and a wicket to Johnathon Aikins (1/8) reduced ECA to 8/47. The lower order showed some fighting spirit, taking the score to 69 before Max Murray (1/19) broke this stand, and Wes Agar (1/10) put ECA out of their misery in the 37th over, all out 78. The CMCA bowling and fielding was utterly relentless throughout.
CMCA suffered an early setback when we lost a wicket second ball, however the little master Will Pucovski and Oliver Milner combined for a clinical and classical stand of 67 to take complete control of the game. Pucovski retired on 25, and Tom Wilson and Milner saw us home without further loss, Milner hitting the winning run to finish unbeaten on 39 no. The umpires had no hesitation in selecting Oliver Milner for the player of the match award.
Top Performers
Will Pucovski 185 runs (3rd for the whole comp), avge 185.0,
4 catches and 12 stumpings
Oliver Milner 142 runs (equal 5th for the competition), avge 47.3
Max Murray 121 runs, avge 24.2 and 22 overs 7/52
Thomas Lamb 131 runs, avge 32.8
Hugh Hamilton 26 overs 14/60 (leading wicket taker for the whole competition)
Jack Vorbach 31 overs 8/68
Luther Lyon 31 overs 5/61
Darcy Kennelly 31 overs 5/73
Thomas Wilson, Wes Agar, Johnathon Aikins, Patrick Burnell, Deep DasGupta and Austin Heldt were also valuable contributors during the tournament.
Acknowledgements
This win completed back-to-back Mitchell Shield premierships, and the CMCA’s 5th win in the last 6 attempts. The side was well skippered by Will Pucovski and Darcy Kennelly. All 14 boys were a pleasure and a privilege to coach, and I am sure many are destined for fine cricket careers. I am most grateful to a very dedicated and supportive bunch of parents who certainly made my job a lot easier during the tournament. The CMCA Executive are also to be thanked for their interest in and support of the Representative teams.
